Guide to a Great Oral Health

Guide to a Great Oral Health

When was the last time you visited your dentist for a regular dental checkup? Although we studied in primaries about visiting dentist and changing brush every quarter, still most of us do this only when we have some dental problem. Take a moment to think about your own oral health. It’s something which far too many of us often overlook but this may worsen many health risks. Developing and maintaining good oral health and hygiene is never too expensive, time-consuming or difficult but can lead to so many worthwhile benefits for the mouth and overall well being.

Complete Dental wellness just involves four most important measures to be followed:

  • Brushing your teeth

How do you feel when your neighbor smiles at you showing all her yellow teeth? Same can be your case. Since childhood we are being taught to brush teeth twice a day. But very less loyal people stay confined to it. Brushing your teeth regularly and thoroughly is important to prevent tooth decay & gum disease. When you brush your teeth, you remove the bacteria that promote tooth decay & plaque that can cause gum disease. Changing the brush every quarter is an important dental advice.

  • Avoid dental enemies

Harmful oral bacteria feed on sugar &acidic substances. Reducing sugar, will effectively reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Avoid acidic foods & alcohol as it strips tooth enamel of its minerals leaving teeth unprotected against cavity-causing bacteria. Smoking harms your teeth affecting the normal function of gum tissue cells and attachment of bone &soft tissue to your teeth, impairing blood flow to  gums.

  • Interdental cleaning

Interdental cleaning of teeth helps wash off plaque & bacteria where your brush does not reach. If these bacteria are not cleaned, from between the teeth, they can make the surface weak and plaque to develop. Cleaning once a day, with dental floss or interdental brushes, helps prevent plaque to become hard into tartar.

  • Visit Dentist regularly

Getting your Oral health checkup every quarter is as important as brushing your teeth. Cavities can lead to swelling & sometimes loss of a tooth. Regular checkups with your dentist allow you to prevent cavities to turn into diseases.

Health Risks

If the built up plaque is not removed, it embeds underneath the gum tissues causing periodontal disease. It produces enzymes that dissolve away the bones.

Gum disease and heart disease are very closely interrelated. Sugar and starch on the teeth produces millions of bacteria that end up in the blood stream. Gum disease increases the level of bacteria in the mouth which gets carried through the blood and can end up lodged in the heart and clog blood vessels. Visiting the dentist should be a regular part of your schedule, just like a proper oral health routine.

It’s time to prioritize our oral health. If you haven’t seen a dentist recently, gear up and stop that dental cavity to ruin your shining teeth & beautiful smile.
